United Way Family Center Workforce Development
Workforce Development is a community outreach component that strives to meet the job preparedness needs of the residents of the Brooklyn/Curtis Bay communities. Specific attention is given those who have low educational attainment, are unemployed/underemployed, seeking new skills or career changes. Each participant is offered case management and advocacy services.
Employment services such as effective resume writing, interview preparation, knowing your legal rights, and other job preparedness skills are offered to each participant through regularly scheduled workshops and on a one-to-one basis as needed. Overall, participants have increased their earning potential by 20% or more.
GED classes are offered at no cost to the participant. The completion rate for these classes has surpassed similar programs in the metropolitan area. On average, participants experienced a grade level attainment in both Reading and Math after one session. Some participants have experienced an increase as high as 20 points or more. Nationwide the average academic increase is 3–5points.
